My old headset was quietly disintegrating, so Mrs G treated me to a new one for my birthday. I’d been recommended the spiffy Plantronics headset, so decided to give it a try.
I don’t have a camera with me, but you can take a look at it here.

Would I buy it again? Yes, desipte all the drawbacks, it’s the best thing on the market so far that I’ve seen. But there’s room for a better product.

Don't know if the latest (1.2.0.48) Skype still does this, but on my machine it switched to using the USB input exculsively when I plugged one in. Which is nice if you've just plugged a USB headset, but not so if your webcam just so happens to also have a mic of abysmal quality.
I'm not quite sure how Skype could manage that mute/no-input info. It's technically quite hard to fetch reliably.
You said: "Being USB-based, I can’t just yank the speaker jack out and share the conversation with those around me in the room using the PC speakers."
This is obviously true, but you are able to easily switch between headset and speakers using PerSono software (free download from Plantronics).
I use this headset for over 2 years with my Cisco SoftPhone (enjoying free calling home via Internet instead of mobile or hotel outrageous charges for international calls, I guess Skype can do the same). You said they feel flimsy. I would say - despite flimsy feel they are very reliable and can stand a lot of battering (they travel with me a lot, but I have a pouch for them). Despite all reservations - this is a product I can safely recommend to a heavy user.
