I know there have been a number of attempts at this, but I want something that actually works and comes baked-in from the vendor. I’m tired of missing Skype calls because I didn’t have a headset plugged in or configured right. My mobile has Bluetooth. It’s time for my handset to secede from the cellular network and recognise its true fate: a remote control and headset for Skype. (Hint to operators: I’m sat in a meeting area in the Institute of Directors in London. Some people around me are making cell calls. Many are using Skype — I can hear the distinctive warbling noises. The future’s bright, the future’s some else’s private voice app.)
Unfortunately, because Bluetooth is an architectural cock-up that too tightly couples the profiles and connection, it’ll take ages to happen, and will be constricted to emulating a Bluetooth headset for ages.
That said, I love the irony of the phone (cellular connected) being demoted to the headset and my PC (Internet connected) being promoted to being the phone.
PS - Further operator bad news: Most of the phones here have the default Nokia ring. And when I landed yesterday morning at Luton Airport, I heard 4 Nokia start-up tunes. You’re being out-branded, too.
