At least *ask* for the customer's money

I message a buddy in Skype who is offline:

The following message appears at the top of the screen.

Spot the up-sell?

When was the last time your mobile phone offered you a one-click impulse send of an MMS from a picture you just took? Tried to up-sell you a phone call from an SMS? Pitched you an offer to call a relative abroad for a discount rate on their birthday?

I think you’re getting the drift. Mobile operators and their handset suppliers are lousy marketers of their core services. Someone else is trying harder (although there’s the irony of whose service they’re cross-selling…)

Yes, and if they fail to sell core services now, are they going to succeed in selling all those exciting new IMS services that are promised?
