Walking back to the office at lunchtime, I passed this street cabinet with a poster attached for a forthcoming local concert.

If this was Japan, that flyer would probably have the QR code (2-dimensional barcode) for the event URL. Indeed, it should have some SMS response system right now! How likely am I to remember the band name and URL by the time I get home?
Anyhow, we’re doing a report on the future of telcos in ad-funded services over at the day job. The assumption is that mobile devices are another medium for mass advertisers.
I wonder if we’re missing the point a little, and the real story might be a democratisation of advertising. Just like the poster captures that public space for a narrow private use, will be post bill-boards down the end of our gardens with QR codes for the eBay auctions we currently have running? Or the political candidates we support? Or causes we’d like to publicise?
Answers on the back of a reply-paid postcard, please. Hurry whilst offer lasts!

I think that democratisation is a great idea and would capture spirit of the Internet. Will the telcos allow it though? If they subsidize the handset and own the network, they'll want to see some revenue, which would hamper uptake.
If we look at what Sprint is planning with their WiMAX network being open and essentially being the mobile Internet in the US, I could see this implemented on a WiMAX device or UMPC.

There is a free download for select cell phone that will support that platform.

Posted by: at January 24, 2007 05:45 PMWhy not just take a picture of the poster? or just SMS the URL to yourself, or put it into the phone's notes function? Why bother with all the complexity of barcodes etc etc?
