Advertorial

Walking back to the office at lunchtime, I passed this street cabinet with a poster attached for a forthcoming local concert.

If this was Japan, that flyer would probably have the QR code (2-dimensional barcode) for the event URL. Indeed, it should have some SMS response system right now! How likely am I to remember the band name and URL by the time I get home?

Anyhow, we're doing a report on the future of telcos in ad-funded services over at the day job. The assumption is that mobile devices are another medium for mass advertisers.

I wonder if we're missing the point a little, and the real story might be a democratisation of advertising. Just like the poster captures that public space for a narrow private use, will be post bill-boards down the end of our gardens with QR codes for the eBay auctions we currently have running? Or the political candidates we support? Or causes we'd like to publicise?

Answers on the back of a reply-paid postcard, please. Hurry whilst offer lasts!
