We’re very sorry to tell you that we have to change your SkypeIn number. As some of you may know, we get SkypeIn numbers from a variety of telecoms suppliers. Unfortunately, we have to return some of the 0207 SkypeIn numbers to one of our suppliers of London numbers.
This means your number will stop working from December 20th 2007. We realise the inconvenience this will cause you, and sincerely apologise.
Skype is not suitable for business use.

This is unbelievable! Like most people I have had my 0207 number printed on all my stationary and adverts and now my customers won’t be able to contact me in a months time. I have just spent a fortune on advertising as Christmas is the busiest time of the year. I am not impressed at all! I will now warn everyone to keep well away from Skype!

Posted by: at November 22, 2007 06:14 PMIt's quite amazing that a company as big as Skype didn't get their numbers directly assigned from OfCom as a public provider of telecommunication services... they should have seen this coming.
Posted by: at November 22, 2007 10:48 PMAh! We are so privileged in Canada. We can't get SkypeIn numbers so that they can be changed. But I did talk with a Canadian DID vendor this afternoon. Turns out that all those suppliers of DID/SkypeIn-type numbers out there (at least in UK and Canada) are at the mercy of the carriers who dole out the numbers.
And, after reading about the number of overall phone number changes in the UK on Wikipedia over the past twenty years (look up "UK telephone code misconceptions"), I could extend your conclusion to "The UK is not suitable for business". You can't even figure out if one of the digits is part of the area code or part of the local phone number!
I'll call you on Skype; your SkypeID remains unchanged!
Posted by: at November 24, 2007 12:42 AMand we have announced that we will port-in to Vonage all those skype-in numbers that are disappearing. so if customers want to keep their skype-in numbers, vonage will happily help them out.
Posted by: at November 27, 2007 08:06 AMSkype is not suitable for business use. Agreed. Skype pulled my 0207 number without warning, and I quote (from an email from a client)
"Hi Steve,
Been trying to reach you for a while now, I've called several times but your
phone just rings off. (Note: A SkypeIn number that was pulled with no notice to me - this was the first I heard of it)
Pls call us or give us a number we can definitely reach you on as we
are ready to do this!"
Deal is now on the rocks. STAY AWAY FROM SKYPE IF YOU RUN A BUSINESS... who knows when this will happen again.
Mac users, have a go at Gizmo Project...
